Follow the Adventure Race 2012 — This Week in Puntarenas & Guanacaste
The Costa Rica Adventure Race 2012 will begin on Saturday, 21st April and will continue for the following week.
Events that will take place between Puntarenas and Guanacaste and include rafting, zip-lining and mountain-biking in a 326-mile route.
There are eighteen teams, each with four members, from twelve different countries. They’ll be competing for prizes with a value of 10 million dollars (USD). It is part of the elimination for the final competition which is to be held in France and these teams are hoping to secure a first position to automatically pass to the next stage.
This is the third year that Costa Rica has hosted this stage of the competition. If this wasn’t exciting enough, Costa Rica has been selected as the host country for the 2013 World Championship Adventure Race for the first time. This will be held during October and November of next year and is expected to draw 90 four-member teams for the competition over a route of around 435 miles.
The Race is truly international with competitors coming from Australia, Brazil, Finland, Sweden, Columbia and approximately 25 other countries from all corners of the globe! The Costa Rican Chamber of Tourism (ICT) explained that the country was chosen to host the well-known competition next year due to aspects, such as its organizational capacity and existing infrastructure, for adventure tourism.
Organizers were also identified Costa Rica’s ‘paradisiac scenery’ and sustainability as influential factors in reaching their decision in choosing this country over others, like for example, USA. The event is expected to bring more tourists to the region for the duration of the competition and provide much positive international publicity for Costa Rica as a tourist destination.
Will you be coming along to see the fiercely fought adventure races? Don’t fear – if spectator sports aren’t your thing, Costa Rica is still the destination for your vacations!
The ICT estimate that 72% of 2011’s visitors to Costa Rica participated in at least one of the many adventure activities that are here to enjoy — whether it’s white water rafting, bungee jumping, diving, zip-lining, rappelling..the list just goes on and on — so you’re bound to find the adrenalin rush that suits you!
